What is Counseling?
Although technically not the same, many people use the term counseling when they are referring to therapy. For this reason, I have used counseling interchangeably with therapy. Therapy, is the process of meeting with a trained mental health professional, a therapist, for the purpose of resolving problematic behaviors, beliefs, feelings, and/or physical reactions to emotional distress. Therapy utilizes the past and present to help people achieve improved emotional well being which leads to improvements in other facets of life.
There are a number of different techniques, models, and philosophies for treating mental health and emotional disturbances. For example, cognitive behavioral therapy or solutions focused therapy are treatment models while deep breathing is a relaxation technique.
There are also many different types of therapy sessions such as individual, couples, family, and group. Because there are various types of treatment, it’s important to screen potential therapist to ensure a good match for you.
Is Therapy for me?
Despite a popular misconception, you don’t have to be crazy to benefit from therapy. Therapy can help heal the wounds and emotional pain from life’s experiences. Therapy can help understand and resolve past events, inner conflict, interpersonal conflicts, biologically related psychological issues, adjustments, and grief and loss. Therapy can help you deal with the distress related to your current life circumstances.
If you are experiencing a mental health condition, it is no different than having a physical ailment; there need not be shame in seeking treatment. Also, most therapy clients are people struggling with common, everyday issues. There is virtually no “right” or “wrong” reason to enlist the help of a mental health professional.
The help of the right therapist can promote self-actualization, empower self-growth, improve relationships, and reduce emotional suffering.
